Go Make! - Experiment in 12 Parts
Experiment in 12 Parts was a 10 week residency in partnership with the John Hansard Gallery, WEA Clovelly Centre, Southampton Youth Offending Team and Southampton City Council.
'There is a temptation to represent the experience of disabled people within ethnic minority communities as a "double oppression". It is assumed that these people have to contend with the disabling experience of impairment and that they must do so within a social environment which in Britain is discriminatory and bigoted against ethnic minority communities.' Ossie Stuart, Disabling Barriers - Enabling Environments. Edited by John Swain, Vic Finkelstein, Sally French and Mike Oliver, Sage Publications.
Applicants for the Go Make! Residency were asked to respond to this quotation and write a brief that would reflect this and explore ways of working within a community setting.
The Award was offered to David Dixon.
"I am an Installation Artist interested in the uncertainty of binary divisions and in the questioning of rigid perspectives. Drawing on concepts that harness this uncertainty, my work often refers to Western physics, chaos theory and Eastern philosophical dialogues focussed around interdependency and impermanence. Through these I look for connections and relationships that call attention to the breakdown of preconceived dualities." David Dixon.
David worked with local community groups to create new work and explore identity within a disability and diversity framework. During a series of workshops a body of work was created and exhibited at the John Hansard Gallery in Southampton.
