Architecture-InsideOut
Working in partnership with Diablo Arts and the University of Brighton, and with funding from Arts Council England South East, Dada-South delivered a programme of activity designed to develop and capture models of new practice for the built environment, led by the creativity and experiences of Deaf and disabled artists.
The programme consisted of a series of ‘charettes' (design workshops) for disabled and Deaf artists and for practising architects, the creation of a website, a series of commissioned works to capture the process in the form of film, blogs and creative books and time and space for the development of the programme. This project aimed to extend what had been achieved to-date by Architecture-InsideOut by reviewing and reflecting on how disabled and deaf artists can better impact on the decision makers of the built environment; and to continue to open up opportunities for partnerships and collaborations, for further research and resources development. Two workshops took place at the InQbate creativity zone at the University of Sussex enabling twenty disabled and Deaf artists to experiment with form, space and light alongside one of their peers to build confidence in discussing space and form.
Seventeen disabled and Deaf artists took part in an intensive design event at Tate Modern. The aim of the design workshop was to bring together architects with disabled and Deaf artists for a constructive dialogue about disability and architecture. A further charette was staged at the Lightbox in Woking and was attended by ten artists and eight architects. The programme culminated in a review event with invited guests at Tate Modern in which the films were shown, the work celebrated and the beginnings of an action plan for the development of the work was initiated. The programme achieved a number of key outcomes and established a strong dialogue between disabled and Deaf artists and architects.
