Stevie graduated in 1995 having studied Theatre, History of Art and Deaf Studies. She started her career managing Kent County Council's Artwise Factory - a Youth Arts Centre in Ramsgate, then left after three years to study for an MA in Theatre, Film & Television at the University of Wales. Then came periods in the late ’'90s as Project Officer for a Kent deaf organisation co-ordinating sign language classes, and a stint as Education Officer for Stratford Circus, the new performing arts centre in East London. For three and a half years she worked as the Head of Education & Training for Shape, the disability arts development agency for London.
